Winter Hot Tubbing: The Most Underrated Experience

Hot tubs are versatile amenities that can be enjoyed year-round, yet they are often overlooked during the colder months. Winter hot tubbing offers not only hydrotherapy benefits but also relief from the harsh winter weather. While some choose to winterize their spas, keeping your hot tub operational during winter has distinct advantages.

How to Maintain Your Hot Tub During Winter?

Keep it operational and full! It’s advisable to periodically run your hot tub to protect the plumbing and components. Draining your hot tub can increase the risk of pipes cracking and freezing, which can lead to leaks. Many hot tubs feature protection modes that activate if the heater fails, preventing the water from freezing. The primary benefit of keeping your hot tub running and full is the ability to enjoy regular hydrotherapy sessions throughout winter, saving money by protecting both your hot tub and its cover.

To prevent damage, ensure your cover is securely locked during windy or stormy conditions. If you’re using existing hot tub cover locks or need additional strapping due to living in a windy area, consider exploring our range of products.

Protect your hot tub or spa cover with a Bag Cover or Cover Cap to shield it from falling branches, leaves, and adverse weather. Cover caps protect just the hot tub cover, while bag covers safeguard the entire hot tub, including its panels.

Installing a Thermal Blanket can help save money and prevent heat loss due to evaporation.

Draining Your Hot Tub for Winter?

Although we recommend keeping your hot tub operational during winter, some users prefer to winterize (drain and shut off) their spa. If you choose this route, it’s crucial to do so thoroughly to avoid issues while the hot tub is out of use. This method can be cost-effective if you do not plan to use your hot tub during the colder months. Winterizing your hot tub involves:

  • Thoroughly drain your hot tub using a Submersible Pump or the built-in gravity drain.
  • Using a wet and dry vacuum to clear all jets of any residual water, preventing freezing issues.
  • Removing and draining the unions from your pumps.
  • Cleaning and drying your shell to ensure a smooth start in the spring.
  • Covering your hot tub with a cover bag to protect it from leaves, branches, and harsh weather, which also helps keep insects and slugs at bay.
