Important Information for Hot Tub and Swim Spa Owners: Handling Temperature-Related Issues in Summer
During the summer months or heat waves, you may notice temperature-related issues with your hot tub or swim spa, such as water being hotter than the set temperature, cloudy water, or various temperature error codes. Often, these spas are operating normally and do not require a service call. Here’s how you can troubleshoot these issues yourself before seeking professional assistance.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Check the Water Temperature
- Verify the spa water temperature with a known accurate thermometer. Ideally, use two different accurate thermometers.
- If the readings are within 2°F of the indicated water temperature, the spa’s temperature sensor is working correctly.
- Verify Pump Operation
- Circulation Pump Spas
- Activate the circulation pump by pressing the ClearRay™ On Demand button.
- Press the 2-speed pump button once to activate low-speed.
- Non-Circulation Pump Spas
- Press the filtration pump button to ensure it is working.
- Circulation Pump Spas
- Check Spa Programming
- Circulation Pump Spas:
- Verify the primary filtration cycle is set to activate during the desired times.
- Ensure the set temperature is more than 2°F below the actual temperature, and the actual temperature is at least 95°F.
- Check if the circulation pump is activating for 2-3 hours every morning and evening, indicating a summer logic condition.
- Non-Circulation Pump Spas
- Verify the filtration cycle times and ensure the pumps are running during those times.
- Circulation Pump Spas:
If your spa passes these tests, it is likely operating correctly. Try the following techniques to adjust the temperature:
Techniques to Adjust Spa Temperature:
- Adjust Filtration Cycles
- For non-circulation pump spas, set the filtration cycles to cooler times of the day, such as early morning, late evening, or overnight.
- Vent the Spa Cover
- Prop the spa’s insulating cover open to allow more heat to escape. Supervise the spa to ensure no animals or debris enter.
- Insert a 6” to 8” length of 3/4” hose or tubing at the points where the cover folds to vent the cover while it is closed.
- Cool the Water
- Remove some of the water from the spa and replace it with cool water.
- Avoid Manual Activation
- Do not manually activate spa pumps or equipment during the hottest parts of the day.
